What Is Neurologic Music Therapy?

  • NMT is defined as the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory and motor dysfunctions due to neurologic  disease of the human nervous system.
  • NMT is based on a neuroscience model of music perception and production and the influence of music on functional changes in non-musical brain and behavior functions.
  • Treatment techniques in neurologic music therapy are based on scientific research and are directed towards functional therapeutic goals.
    • Focusing on rehabilitative, developmental and/or adaptive goal areas
  • Treatment techniques are standardized and applied to therapy as Therapeutic Music Interventions (TMI), which are adaptable to the patient's needs.
  • NMT provides opportunities to train and retrain the brain and thereby adapt, rehabilitate or develop skills for improved thinking, moving, speaking, communicating and emotional well-being.
  • Music shares regions of the brain and neural circuits that are used in the planning and production of speech and motor function, as well as executive functioning and emotional centers.
  • This scientifically supported use of Standardized Clinical Techniques is unique to NMT as well as the advanced neuroscience and research training required in order to obtain the credentials NMT.
